A Gunna type beat is defined by two or three chords, a lot of space, and drums that bounce without getting busy.

Loops to start with

You do not need a finished beat to start. The Gunna loops sit in step 1 and again at the bottom, ready to play.

What BPM and key is a Gunna type beat?

Most beats run 125 to 140 BPM, a few up to 150.

The key is minor, C sharp minor comes up most often. Three chords are enough.

  1. 1Pick a sample

  2. 2Lay the 808
It is the foundation. On the root notes, with rests. The same figure for two bars, then one variation.
  3. 3Hi-hats on top
Two-step pattern, quiet. Push a few hats a few milliseconds off the grid.
  4. 4Clap and kick
Clap on 2 and 4, a short kick under it. Plus one open hat, at most one perc.
  5. 5Try the pitch
Only once the drums sit. Move the loop a few semitones up and down and keep the position where it breathes best.
  6. 6Arrange
Keep it simple, less is more. Three layers at the same time at most, 8 bars melody, then the drums, hook early. That keeps it catchy and easier to place.

Pitch the sample up and down

The position of the loop is not fixed. A few semitones change its character.

Up the Rhodes gets lighter and airier, down it gets fuller and slower.

The key moves with it, so move the 808 root notes after.

Common mistakes

No high-pass on the melody. Cut the lows, the bottom belongs to the 808.

Too many effects. The vibe comes from the Rhodes itself, not from reverb, delay and chorus on top of it.

Hi-hats too complicated. Building a different pattern every bar takes the bounce out of it.
