How to Make a Swapa Type Beat (Free Loops)

A Swapa type beat lives on ambient texture, not on a hook. Swapa, the New Jersey producer Shaun Stephenson, built his name on washed-out, dreamy loops behind artists like Devstacks, Slump6s and Natecxo. The sound sits next to pluggnb: detuned synths, choir pads, soft 808s and a lot of air. This guide shows how to build one from free melody loops.

You do not need a finished beat to start. The Swapa loops sit in step 1 and again at the bottom, ready to play.

Start with the loop

Grab a melody loop tagged Ambient, Vintage or Choir in a minor key. The loop carries the whole beat here, so pick one that already feels hazy and unresolved rather than bright.

Keep it simple. Two or three chords looping with a small detuned lead on top is the core of the Swapa sound. If the loop is busy, cut it down before you add anything.

Set tempo and key

Work between 130 and 160 BPM. The feel is slow and floating even when the hats imply a faster grid, so lean toward the lower half if you want it dreamier.

Stay in minor. Fmin, Cmin and G#min all sit well under this style. Lock your drums and 808 to the loop's key before you write a single bass note.

Build the drums

Keep the pattern sparse. A simple kick, a clap or snare on the backbeat, and hats that roll lightly without crowding the space. Busy drums kill the ambient feel.

Use hat rolls and triplets as accents, not as a constant texture. Leave gaps so the pads can breathe.

Program the 808

Pick a soft, rounded 808 rather than a hard distorted one. It should blend into the low end, not punch through the mix.

Glide between notes to follow the melody. Long, sliding 808 lines that move with the chords are a signature move in this lane.

Layer pads and choir

Stack a choir pad or soft synth behind the main loop to widen the space. A Choir-tagged loop layered under the melody gives you that church-like, distant wash instantly.

Add reverb and a touch of detune. The slightly out-of-tune, blurred quality is what makes it read as Swapa rather than clean trap.

Mix for space

Carve room with reverb and delay but keep the low end tight. Wet pads plus a clean sub is the balance you want.

Leave headroom and empty bars. The space between the sounds is as important as the sounds, so resist the urge to fill every bar.

FAQ

What BPM is a Swapa type beat?

Most sit between 130 and 160 BPM. The groove feels slow and floating, so start around 140 and adjust to how the hats sit.

What key should I use?

Minor keys. Fmin, Cmin and G#min are reliable starting points for the dark, unresolved ambient feel.

Which loops work best?

Melody loops tagged Ambient, Vintage, Dark or Choir. Hazy, detuned and minor beats you to the sound before you add drums.

What makes it a Swapa beat and not generic trap?

Ambient texture, detuned pads, choir layers and a lot of empty space. It is closer to pluggnb than to hard trap.

Can I use the free loops in my own beats?

Yes. The melody loops on ndacompany.de are free to download and build on.

They are not royalty-free. Free in your own beats; a 50/50 publishing split with NDA Company applies to every commercial release. License Terms
