An 808 Mafia type beat is built on three things: a detuned 808 that slides under everything, trap drums that hit hard without clutter, and a dark synth or bell line that sets the mood. The sound came out of Atlanta around 2010 with Southside and Lex Luger and still drives trap today. It is menacing, minimal, and loud. This guide walks the BPM, the key, the drums, and the mix, with free melody loops from ndacompany to start from.
You do not need a finished beat to start. The 808mafia loops sit in step 1 and again at the bottom, ready to play.
Most 808 Mafia type beats sit around 140 BPM played as halftime, so the drums feel like 70 BPM while the hi-hats run on the faster count. The usable range is wide, from a slow 120 up to 200 for faster hi-hat work, but 140 is the anchor.
The key is almost always minor. Bmin, D#min and Fmin are common choices because they keep the melody dark and leave room for the 808 to sit low. Pick your key from the melody loop first, then tune the 808 to its root note.
The 808 is the center of the sound. Use a detuned, slightly distorted 808 with glides between notes so the bassline slides instead of stepping. Tune it to the root of your key and let it ring long enough to carry the low end on its own.
Drums stay hard and uncluttered: a cracking snare or clap on the backbeat, a punchy kick locked to the 808, and fast hi-hat rolls (triplets, 1/16 and 1/32 bursts) that leave space between phrases. This is the Southside approach, maximum impact with minimal elements.
The melody is carried by virtual synths, not live instruments. Dark bells, brass stabs and detuned plucks from Nexus and Omnisphere are the classic sources. Keep it to a short two or three note motif that loops, not a full chord progression.
Add menace with pitch bends, reverb and a touch of detune. The 808 Mafia melodies feel eerie and cinematic rather than pretty, which is where TM88's orchestral, Kill Bill influenced side comes through.
The arrangement is simple: intro with the melody alone, drop the 808 and drums together, pull the drums out for a short break, then bring everything back. Space is part of the sound, so do not fill every bar.
In the mix, the 808 and the melody should not fight. Sidechain or EQ the low mids out of the synths so the 808 owns the bottom. Keep the master loud but let the snare and 808 breathe.
808 Mafia started in Atlanta around 2010 with Southside and Lex Luger out of Waka Flocka's Brick Squad camp, with TM88 joining soon after. The name comes from the Roland TR-808. Southside leans sparse and aggressive, TM88 leans cinematic.
For reference, study Lex Luger's work for Waka Flocka, Southside's placements with Future and Gucci Mane (Ferrari Boyz), and TM88's co-production on Lil Uzi Vert's XO Tour Llif3. The harder, drum-forward trap from the Tay Keith circle shares the same DNA.
The two most common mistakes are too much melody and a weak 808. If the synth plays a full chord progression it stops sounding like 808 Mafia. Keep the motif short and let the 808 do the heavy lifting.
Watch the hi-hats too. Rolls that never stop get tiring fast. Leave gaps, vary the speed, and keep the drums serving the beat rather than showing off.
Pick a loop and drag it into your DAW. 808 under it, clap on top, your first 808mafia beat is running.

Around 140 BPM played as halftime, which feels like 70 BPM. The wider range runs from 120 to 200 depending on how fast you want the hi-hats.
A minor key. Bmin, D#min and Fmin are common. Choose the key from your melody loop, then tune the 808 to the root note.
Virtual synths like Nexus and Omnisphere for the dark bells, brass and plucks, plus a detuned, distorted 808 for the bass.
Southside and Lex Luger founded it around 2010 in Atlanta, with TM88 a core member. They produced for Waka Flocka, Future, Gucci Mane and Lil Uzi Vert.
